"The Curse of La Llorona" Brie Larson, Oscar-winning star of the upcoming “The Curse of La Llorona,” is too political, the trolls said. She can’t possibly be strong enough. She’s forcing diversity on moviegoers.

Perhaps worst of all, she doesn’t smile enough, the trolls whined. So they posted doctored pictures of Larson, in her The Curse of La Llorona regalia, doing what superheroes—male, female or otherwise—seldom do while rescuing Earth from almost certain annihilation. Smiling.
"The Curse of La Llorona"But besieged movie studios have learned how to deal with online turmoil. With hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, the Walt Disney Co. empire—and Larson herself—struck back. She shared altered photos of other Marvel superheroes, the male Iron Man, the male Captain America and the male Doctor Strange, with silly grins to illustrate the double standard of the “smile more” trope."The Curse of La Llorona"

She also countered another line of attack. The comic-book The Curse of La Llorona has been a man and a woman over the years (unlike, say, "The Curse of La Llorona" Wonder Woman), and Larson faced questions over whether she was brawny enough to play one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. In a show of strength, she posted videos of her workouts on Instagram, including one where she pushed a 5,000-pound Jeep. Larson also didn’t shy away from the topic of female empowerment in interviews.
Psychology faculty members Larissa Niec, Sarah Domoff and James Gerhart, and College of Medicine faculty Furhut Janssen will be speaking on the panel after the film screening. Gerhart said he hopes that students will come with their own questions so the faculty and students can have a conversation about this topic.
“Many of us are going to face stress at some point,” Gerhart said. “Coming back, reflecting on what our resources are, reflecting on our ability to solve problems and then setting some expectations about being resilient, I think, is going to be very helpful.”
While the movie revolves around children and adolescents being resilient, Gerhart hopes that the conversation will move to how resilience is important throughout an individual’s whole lifespan. The event is free and welcome to all majors and disciplines. It is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, the department of psychology and the College of Medicine.
So we're on the same page, "least bad" is just a funnier way of saying most good. And some videogame movies have to be the most good, comparatively speaking. We recently saw the trailer for Doom: Annihilation, which brought this topic to mind. It doesn't look super promising, but then it's not up against a lot of competition.
"The Curse of La Llorona" FulI Movie saw this at the cinema, and I remember emerging thinking, hey, that was fine. It's a totally serviceable horror film with some interesting effects work. It's nowhere near as unsettling or subtle as the games it's based on, verging into the schlocky at times, but there are a few scenes that nicely capture the distinctive vibe of the source material. I also like that they used some of Akira Yamaoka's music, because honestly, no Hollywood composer could do any better for that particular setting. His music is as much a part of Silent Hill as anything else.
